Don't give too many idea away though

You want to show enough ideas so people have something to make a start from if they're stuck but show too much and it'd be too easy for them

Then this is a good opportunity to learn SED2. SS2's had wayy less contests than SS1, and it's much more unpopular, so it needs all the loving it can get.

It's not so bad, trust me. As soon as you get hand of the basics and start mapping, I doubt you'll want to go back - it alone makes SS2 well worth mapping for. You could create practically anything with it, and it's got far less restrictions than any other editor to date.

We should still do contests using SED1 though.

You could try playing or watching some horror material for inspiration, say Zombie Panic! Source mod for HL2. It's made of awesomeness.

I'm kinda stuck too.

Not on ideas though, I've got a "from scratch" enemy model and I'm having trouble trying to figure out how to attach it to a skeleton that I loaded from the generic skeleton file (used for Orc soldiers, Sam and other biped enemies)

You need to set model's mesh to fit each bone, for example, hand should be at hand bone and all others too in same way... i guess you know names for all bones...and then add weights to proper polys... but first activate skeleton view in mesh editor for easier placing and try to work it out...you won't see bone names but they aren't hard to remember where is which one...

And i think polys doesn't have to be perfectly placed on bones, because i already did this with mesh bit smaler than it should be and anims worked quite good...

You can enter anim editor on any of biped models like scifis and make new anim, then add all bones to anim and study names, thats one way...

Well....it works.....kinda....pieces detach at the joints a bit but it works
I was never good at modelling anyway

But since the map is set at night, you won't notice the bugs

I'm just glad it's the only enemy I have to make from scratch

It's basically meant to be a gargoyle.....thing....yeah. The pipe in the mouth and teeth I took from the idea of the gargoyles in the Discworld books (yeah).....the pipe is basically a piece of drainpipe because it lives ontop a castle, the teeth, since the gargoyle is a type of Troll, are made of diamond. They don't really look like that, that was my own idea

Laugh if you must.....I would

Looks interesting, but only if you could fix uvmap on lower legs, if you didnt already...and this is just idea...to add some more textures in layers to make it look less monotonous...

Alright, just got back from Estonia and I'm back in business (may create a luxor thread about the trip later ).

Will start mapping ASAP, I've got loads of good ideas, I just hope my map won't end up too big so I'll still have time to finish it...

Not long after you posted that, SED2 just crashed on me and I lost a ton of work......well....ok not a ton but I'm a slow mapper so it seems that way to me

I suggest that we release a mappack of all of the contest entrys onto the filesystem after the contest is over

For this contest the mappack would be called

"spooky map contest 2008" or something like that

That'd be very cool, I think it could have a coop start map too where you can select which level to play.

By the way, I'll be splitting mine into seperate levels, since it will run and play better that way (I'm aiming for a very cinematic feel in the levels so there are a lot of models and effects around so it makes sense to zone it up). It's easier to change the lightning, terrains and all that too.
