Default Old school and new old school FAST type games

This list is basically for ONLY fast gameplay with cutscenes, no rpg, no slow moving (like Mass Effect, Bioshock, Stalker, Witcher, Rage, Borderlands, etc although those almost made the cut), and no cover based games that break the gameplay pace.
I also didnt put in any side scrollers, because the list would be huge, since almost all side scrolers are fast paced, heh.
The games dont have to be good, just fast paced! (although listing if it was good or not would be cool).

The list is by no means complete.
I dont have my cd's and dvd's out, so cant refer to them.

What is your list of games like these, fast paced, fast fast fast?
No cover, all man!

Why aren't there more Raven Software game on the list, you seem to list other games that you can't buy ?

You would probably like their first Soldier Of Fortune game, there is an unofficial patch for it for modern systems. And you might like their Star Trek Elite Force and Star Wars Jedi Knight games if you like those franchises. Not sure if you played Quake 4 already ? I haven't played their older titles like Hexen and Heretic, or newer ones like Wolfenstein or Singularity.

Also, what do you think about all those early 2000 WW2 games like Medal Of Honor, Call Of Duty 1 and Return To Castle Wolfenstein ? Those were quite fun.

Then there is Red Faction which was excellent. I didn't like the the sequel though.

How about the first Far Cry ? That was a blast. Doom 3 ?

Why aren't Quake 1 and 2 on the list ? Where is Max Payne 2, maybe it has a fewer enemies, but it has much better gunplay than the original ?

Like I said, I dont have access to my cd's and dvd's right now (they are boxed up somewhere from the move), and my memory sucks! So, I went off of my steam and gog games.
SOF would certainly be on there, forgot about that one!
Star Trek I have also on cd, and forgot, but that has like lines you have to read, right? So it would break the pacing, and make it a 1/2 and 1/2 fast game, which wouldnt make the cut.
Doom 3 is in there. The old ones are under Doom - Then 3 links, 1/2/3, then Doom 2016 - link. Same with Max Payne, there are 2 links, 1 and 2. 3 was an interactive movie, and not fast paced, so didnt include it.
I remembered the Star Wars, but couldnt remember what title was fast and what wasnt, so didnt include them, but the Jedi series in.
I cant beleieve I put Q3 and Wolf, but forgot Hexen and Quake 1/2/4 !
RTCW didnt make the list because it had stealthy modes, where a whole map was just stealth. So, it wasnt just a little out of bounds, but a lot.
Yeah, I forgot MOH and COD early games, they were fast paced.
I never played Red Faction, except Gurilla, and that wasnt fast paced.
FarCry wasnt that fast paced all the time either, you had to snipe, sneak, and that sorta thing through most of the game. Although, I did put in Crysis, as that was pure non-stop fighting.

Thanks for the input!

Remember, this is a list of fast paced games, not good old games (although my list includes almost all the games I think were good, because I like fast paced games, lol).

I never played Descent. I heard it was kinda fast paced, but it also has space craft fighting? I cant imaging space craft fighting being fast paced, although Star Wars Tie Fighter vs X-Wing was fast enough WHEN you found someone!
OK, I checked a youtube video on Descent, and it seemed on the edge. It reminded me of Alpha Prime, which was kinda fast but not really, in that way that is hectic. Here is the video I watched: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RnacEU9-v0 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDAiYfw3l-8
Same with Descent 2.
What do the rest of you think? Vote yes or no? I vote No. It just doesnt have that fast paced, frantic type feel to it, for me.
.

I never finished Redneck Rampage either!
I got it on gog.com, but it had an issue where the menu would be off the bottom of the monitor, and I couldnt ever get saves or keybinding to work right, so only played a very little bit of it until I got stuck.
Do you know of any mod, or engine, that could make the game better to play, or actually do recent screen resolutions? If I could make it play right where I could play and save, I would definitely do it!

Remember, this is a list of fast paced games, not good old games It also includes NEW games that are fast paced!

Ha, I saw multiple links under Max Payne and several under Doom and thought those were all the places you can buy them. Didn't see those were Steam links for multiple games

I wasn't sure about Far Cry 1, because, even though there are "stealthy" sections, the game is more "play how ever you want" just like Crysis. Now when I think about it, there was this part where they took all your weapons, and had to go trough a level avoiding those monsters...

I don't know about modern Red Faction games, but Red Faction 1 is an amazing old shooter. It is not Blood or Duke Nukem 3D style game, but if you liked stuff like Quake 2 and Soldier Of Fortune 1 I see no reason why you wouldn't like it.

Speaking of COD, I don't know if any of the sequels would fit this list. Already in COD2 they switched to regenerative health, so I only played until the first time it said I should look for cover to heal.

And I can't recommend any new games, since I was stuck with an old PC for so long, I basically have 10 years of games to catch up.

Oh, and I added most of the ones you guys said to the list, so I will keep it updated as more people put there list in.

And, there may be multiple places to buy these (more than a few are on gog AND steam), but I just put in whatever link was handy at the time (whichever page I was on at the time).

It doesnt have to be a shooter to be fast paced!
I have some non-shooters in there, like Trackmania and Flatout, that are just pure racing and fast (no missions, no grinding for parts, just fast racing).
Maybe I should put in the motorcycle ones too, Moto Racer series? I think those would fit the fast paced, no missions, type play that this list is of? Dunno, been so long since I played them.

Also, if there are good console games that are pure fast paced games, they could go on here also (and, I played Halo, and its not really fast paced, at least from what I remeber, and I already said my memory sucks) but that was the only one I played, the first one. Was that series, or a particular one, fast paced?

WOW, Red Faction 1 WAS fast paced!
Just did a quick youtube. Cant believe I didnt know about this.
I got Red Faction Gurilla with a video card, and it was cool, but not fast paced.
I wonder........
Would like to play it.....
Damn, would REALLY like to play it!.....

I was also thinking Turok would be a good fit, and not really sure about Half Life since it is more story based/focused, and a little slower paced (like Mass Efeect's), but maybe HL's would be a good fit? What does everyone think? Fast paced enough?
Also, what was that something Rock, or rock something, or nothing with rock game, the wannabe SS game called? It had skelletons, castles, everyone compared it to Serious Sam. It would be a perfect fit here. WILL ROCK! Got it!

Are there seriously people who still believe this? Those are not SS1 HD and SS2 HD. They are SS: TFE HD and SS: TSE HD.

Besides that, the list is missing:

Will Rock (I think?)
Shadow Warrior (the new one)
Strife: The Quest for the Sigil (I don't care that it got RPG elements and NPCs, the gameplay is fast as any Doom-clone)
Terminal Velocity
Heretic

And probably some others I can't recall right now.

I put in Will Rock right before your post. Hehe
Shadow Warrior 2013 I was thinking about putting in, but I never got past 2nd? 3rd? map, so didnt know if it was still fast paced after that. Should have put it in, and will, since you say its fast paced.
Strife. I tried playing it (gog version) but only got a few minutes of play (I cant remember what happened, but I think it kept crashing on me) so I didnt know. But, if its got rpg elements and npc's that you have to talk to (both like the Witcher series) that slow the pace then its not what is meant for this thread. The Elder Scrolls is fast paced, but it has rpg and npc's, and missions, and stuff like that, that slow it down, so it isnt really 'old school fast paced', even though most or 1/2 of it is. So, depending on how much is like that, seems a no for what this thread is. Will check youtubes. Checked https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUu7C1vWxCw , and I dont think it fits.
Terminal Velocity I never heard of or played. Will check out youtubes. WOW! Yup. its in! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kL3O9LAUNSw
Grrr, this is the 2nd time I didnt put in Heretic, and Antonio.R said it the 2nd post! Derp on me!

As for SS1 and 2, I will be polite, and change them, even though everyone knows what I meant.

I just remembered Necrovision. I bought it few years ago, but never played, since my PC couldn't run it back then.

The same studio made Dreadfall Adventures, which I remember you mentioning before.

BTW

- Bedlam link points to Carmageddon site.
- I never played Alien Colonial marines, but it just got a brand new mod that seems to make some fixes to the game, enemy AI and it also increases the speed of the aliens. It might be worth replaying it: http://www.moddb.com/mods/templargfxs-acm-overhaul

I'd say that video about Strife doesn't give it real justice. It seems to be the old DOS version, being slow like the original Doom before everyone forgot that due to ZDoom.

Yeah, added Necrovision games. Except for the crashing, and muddy graphics, and bad story, they were pretty decent fast paced shooters.
Deadfall Adventures doesnt fit, since it has puzzles, most of the shooting is behind stuff or sniping, etc. Good game, but not for this thread.
Fixed Bedlam link.
And, yes, I saw that AC:M mod. We might be trying it when my buddies come up. But, it seems to make it into a cover based shooter instead of a fast paced game, which I dont really like. Fast pace, scary fast aliens, lots of spooky parts. I wouldnt change it, except to add more maps to it to make it a longer playthrough.

Was there a remake of the game?
Or was it modded?

It works on ZDoom like most Doom engine games. There's even a brutal version, though not as brutal as Doom, since many enemies are robots.

Unless when I use this nice blue color I totally didn't steal from Blizzard.

Hmm, so I could take my files from a gog install, and use zdoom to play?
And it will look better, and not crash, and fit large screen resolutions?
That would be totally cool.

What about 3D top down shooters like Shadowgrounds ? It's basically Serious Doom 3 from a top down perspective. Here is the link, skip the video to 1:10 (note that the camera can move freely, but they recorded it with the static camera option) http://store.steampowered.com/app/2500/ Unfortunately it has only local coop.

Yes you can, though the Steam re-release named Strife: Veteran Edition is even better.

That's a pretty comprehensive list. Very nice.

  • I agree that Descent 1 and 2 shouldn't be on the list. They're not as frantic and fast paced on higher difficulty.
  • Also, you link to FEAR, but it's worth to link the expansion packs as well. Extraction Point is a lot like FEAR, but Perseus Mandate focuses more on combat and less on atmosphere and scaring the player. FEAR 2 also has a DLC, Reborn: It's pretty short but still enjoyable.
  • Why is Wolfenstein 2009 not on the list? You can still get a boxed copy on the internet.
  • Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil? You only link to Doom 3.
  • Duke Nukem 3D used to be available on Steam, because I bought it two months ago. But I suppose there's licensing issues going on, so it might be back later.
  • If Doom 3 is on the list I think Unreal 2 deserves to be on the list as well. They're equally fast paced, and Unreal 2 is actually a great FPS, just not a great Unreal game.
  • Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood. It's pretty fast paced, because every five kills you get a "bullet time" option that's only available for a minute before it disappears, so you have to keep your pace up to make use of it.
  • Crysis Warhead is an expansion to Crysis, and it plays exactly the same.
  • TimeShift is an overlooked gem. It looks and plays a lot like FEAR, but it has a lot more time options to mess around with. Look it up on Steam.
  • Duke Nukem Forever isn't exactly the classic DN3D is, but it's still pretty fast paced.
  • Half-Life 1 might be more story-focused, but Gordon Freeman runs like a speedboat on crack.

There is a lot of drama happening now around Duke Nukem 3D, and Gearbox caused it to be removed from both Steam and GOG. Some rumors say they were/are planing to make their own re-release, so they are bullying everyone involved with other releases like the Megaton Edition on Steam that was published by Devlover Digital 3 years ago.

I wouldn't call Unreal 2 fast paced, you move slower than a snail.

I would definitely say that the Halo franchise is fast paced gameplay. Sure there is a little bit of downtime and movement is a little bit slower than other games on the list. But the games are ripe with intense, fast-paced, massive battles.

Not slower than Doom 3, which also made the list.

Doom 3 kinda felt faster, likely because of the closed environment.

I'd add Chasm: The Rift and Powerslave/Exhumed.
