Default Serious Review Megathread

Because of the heavy interest shown last time, I'll make a megathread about this map review youtube series and see how it goes. And what better time to start the thread then the time I upload the second episode?

This is where I'll keep posting new episodes, have discussions and keep you updated, depending on how interested you are. You should also recommend some stuff to review, I don't think I'll have material for too long.

My equipment still sucks though, so please bear with me.

Episode list:

Episode 1 - Rakanishu's Persepolis

Episode 2 - Portals

Episode 3 - Realm of Illusions

Episode 4 - Rakanishu's Teotihuacan

Episode 5 - Get Lost (Coming in January)

Episode 6 -??? (Coming in April)

Aww yiss, finally. I couldn't agree more, the old maps like Portals, Alpine Mists and Hidden City of the Otmosis were amazing, but a lot of their aspects don't hold up today. That doesn't decrease the value they hold for being the foundation of the Serious Sam modding community. This was very well done, and I can't wait to see what you'll come up with next.

The third one is actually finished. It's just that; 1 - I'm not quite sure about it, 2 - I have something else planned for next month.

You could PM Deviantel, he made it. If you show it to him and he gives his blessing it must be fine.

Deviantel's whole Realm of Illusions trilogy is for TSE Classic, it'd be awesome if you review them all down the line.

Great job, I liked it a lot.

There are some small things, though:

The whole trilogy has different endings depending on your choices. Maybe sometimes you didn't realize you had a choice but you can get two endings in every chapter.

And this is subjective I suppose, but I don't think the premise of Stella should be handwaved with "get over her". If you ever loved someone who doesn't love you back you know how deep that can hurt, and some people would do a lot to relieve that pain.

And lastly, I would have loved some attention on the parallels between the trilogy as a whole, because it's not called the Realm of Illusions trilogy for nothing. Other than that, fine work and keep at it.

Really? Because I remember playing the first one two opposite ways and nothing changed.

That was one of the jokes I was worried about being too tasteless.

You're right, I should have talked about that. I guess I just forgot.

Lucien is actually the one with just one ending. Both ROI and Stella have two different endings, based on the choices that you make. There's 5 of them in each, and 3 taken actions determine what ending you are going to get. What did you do differently in the first part on your second run?

In Stella, I got all of them. Everytime the paths diverged, I saved, than came back later.

In the first one, I assume it's the blind-deaf kleer, the guy who killed Jill and the monster at the end. In one run, I killed the kleer, killed the guy and killed the monster, in the other run I kept all of them alive and nothing really changed.

The choices in the first one are:
1. The Kleer
2. The guy hanging from the ceiling
3. The mirror
4. The guy responsible for Jill's death
5. The monster

Letting the Kleer live, dropping the guy into the abyss (mercy kill), not going through the mirror but through the door, letting the driver live, and not killing the monster are the choices for the good ending. It basically means that you are paying attention to things and not letting your anger get the best of you (especially the anger towards yourself, which is going into the mirror because you are taunted by your image, and killing the monster which is basically you).

I've made the map back in 2007, so now that I think about it, the choices aren't as intuitive as in Stella. For example, the last choice could also be interpreted as killing the angry side of you, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, right? But that's how I envisioned it back then.

The choices in Stella are a lot more obvious and intuitive. You are either running after Stella, or moving away from her and listening to your ego (the inverted Sam). So it's basically:
1. Answer the phone or leave
2. Drive away or stay with your friend
3. Ask Stella to stay or answer the door
4. Shoot your ego or Stella
5. Leave or check the coffin for Stella's body

Btw, if you do all the Wishmaster choices, you get the only secret in the map, and that's the door behind you in the last area. It's a little shameless promotion of my music.

Huh, I didn't know you can go through the mirror. And I totally forgot about the dude hanging from the ceiling. But I am pretty sure I did try not releasing him.

But I did get all endings with Stella, those were a bit more obvious to get.

Fourth episode is up here!

In the meantime, please recommend me new maps. I'm running out of material, as a lot of maps are hard to talk about. Preferably awful ones, those are funnier. I want to keep doing this series as long as possible, fill this tiny little niche.

I'll check out your review soon.

As for a suggestion for the next review, I say Dark Island. Not only is the quality questionable, but the history behind it is pretty bad as well. It was made by a community mapper for inclusion with Serious Sam Gold in 2003. He got the job because he knew the right people and not his skills, despite having MUCH better talent at the time like pompey, toastar, Kristo, Armern who made quality maps. The thing that makes the whole ordeal weird is that the map pack itself isn't really awful, it's just that when you want to include community content to represent your game franchise, the tools to make content and the quality the community can put forward you'd want the cream of the crop and not mediocrity.

So I'd say this would make for an awesome review.

Great review, I like how your criticism is pretty much always on the money.

The last map restarting is because it tries to load up another wld file that doesn't exist in your game folder. Well, doesn't exist yet because Raka has yet to release it.

Nice review! Though the music was a bit too louder than your voice sometimes, I had problems while listening to you. And I agree with Discy - you should definitely make a review of Dark Island, that I would really love to watch.

p.s. there's nothing wrong with shipping u scrub

Wow, I just played Dark Island... I don't know if a review would do it justice, I could just show raw footage and it would speak for itself.

It's worse than Hitleeerrrrrrrrr and stuff...
