Lightbulb One big happy family

Since it was 15 years when Croteam started the new age of doom shooters, I want to see SS4 to be packed with shitload of references to his siblings. Easter eggs, one-liners, gameplay mechanics. I want to drop a tear playing it! I want to say "Yes, I was there, I lived it!"

Who is with me?

Isn't that pretty much every Serious Sam game?

References aren't really that funny.

Well, actually they are, when they are not turning the game into a some kind of parody of another games. I mean - there was a good suggestion about SS3 one liner which activates when Sam grabs his third weapon, don't remember who made it, but it was "Two weapon limit is for pussies!" and it was pretty actual back in 2011, because of DNF release and his oneliner about his powerarmor. And was about to be good pun. Unfortunately - pun opportunity - missed.

Now, if SS4 have some bare hands game start, there will be cool if Sam says something like
"No matter I have no guns yet, you are all doomed!".

Hm, may be my tryout to DooM franchise reference wasn't that obvious, as I think is.

I agree that references and in-jokes are fine, as long as it's done either subtly or separately in secrets so that it doesn't interfere with the storytelling. Duke is a parody in and of itself, so it's not meant to be serious.

There was already a Painkiller joke in the previous game.

I don't think the first is a reference to the Painkiller franchise. See, that the game from 2004 and the Judas Priest's album from 1990 share the same name, doesn't mean that they have any relations to each-other.

There's other refs but I can't think of them. Either way, with all these possible refs to popular FPS', it's too much of a coincidence.

Nah, I don't think that they are references at all.

Croteam is known for making jokes and jabs at other games, but since there aren't any other references in Sam3 and the general tone is almost humorless I'm not sure what to think. I'd love for more references to other games in the next Sam game without going overboard.

You're wrong! It should be like Magicka with references coming out of their ears! Because being punny is very funny.

I liked the tone and writing of Sam 2. I'd like more of that.

Maybe like a spin-off game. With different protagonist, like Santa Sam or another known face.

This topic brings me back to our last conversation w/ Solais about Russian localization of SS3 actually having some straight-to-face references to some other FPS heroes, added by our translators to make the game at least a bit more funny than it is (and I can't blame them for it even though they managed to screw up some other things). Like, for example, they changed the graffiti lines "Killroy was here" and "And so was Smoe" with "Duke was here" and "Hello from Daniel Garner". It was a bit too harsh, but still very nice to see, especially in comparison to the pretty much boring and simplistic lines the original English version had (and yeah, I know that Killroy/Smoe puns are iconic in some sort, but...).
I kinda wish Croteam take these notes and put some references to SS4 BUT, as it was said by numerous people above, it should be done very subtle and clever, because Croteam can't seem to have a golden medium in their minds so they either make everything stale as in BFE or simply put a fucking shit-ton of references and easter-eggs like in Talos.

Though I think it worked well in Talos.

That was still a bit way over the top Even Tom and Jonas said that it could've been done better and not so straightforward at times.
