Default Lost newbie cannot make it rain

I've seen at least two posted tutorials out there on how to make it rain. In both, one of the instructions is to place a WorldSettingsController and then set the property named "Height Map" appropriately. Okay, so when I open the list of properties, I see "Name" and a few other properties, but no "Height Map"! Maybe the tutorials are for SS1, but I have installed SS2 (never had SS1); is that what's going on? HELP!

Okay, I'm making headway with my own problem, but still not solved It turns out in SS2 some of the WorldSettingsController (WSC) has been split off as a new entity called EnvironmentParticlesHolder (EPH). The Height Map property is now there. Now my problem is how to connect the EPH to the WSC, or vise-versa, or someplace else. At this point, I got the sound of rain (using the SoundHolder), but still no rain. Bummer!

In the properties of the WSC you need to set the EPH-tag to the EPH you added. That's it (I think)

The rain IS deifferent in FE and SE.

Here's a quick tut in SE rain:

You need 4 entities:

-Environment particles holder
-Background viewer (the same in your skybox)
-World settings controller
-Trigger

First, select your Background viewer and go to the "world setting" controller property
and choose your world settings controller.

Then go to your world settings controller and in the Environment particles holder property choose your environment particles holder.

I think your world settings controller and your Environment particles holder must be at your map's origin. Not sure though.

Then, go to the Environment particles holder and set its type to "rain".
And the last step is to go to triggers "auto start" property and check it. Then set it's event type Target01 as "start event". Then set its target 01 to your Environment particles holder.

Got it! Now it's raining!

Okay, the 4 entities are needed, with the properties set as described. But, other stuff also: yes, put EPH and SoundHolder in the map (WSC can be anywhere). But, both EPH and SoundHolder need to be placed at center of the area where its gonna be raining. Then set the Fall-off and Hot-spot for sound as far as rain will be heard. Finally, set the EPH's Height Map Box property to include area where rain will occur and be seen.

I think that was all. In any case, now that I got it working, I'll be writing and submitting a tutorial on all this for SS2 since it's different enough from the rain tutorials I found (on SS1 ways). Probably another 3-5 days before I get it done; got other stuff to do. I'll add one more message to this thread at that time about where it can be found.

Hey, Seriously! Forums rules!! Thanx for supportive responses. I think I'll stick around here (not like another place I went and got infinite flames after my first post).

My rain tutorial should be available by 8-14-2002. I have time, if I knew how, to add steps for including lightning in it. Been playing with that, using Lightning and StormController entities, but no success. Any help?

I feel so new and so stupid about all this. That's why I plan to upload tutorials on an ongoing basis on anything I figure out. Might help others to feel less uncomfortable than I do.

Thanx for the welcomes.

A tutorial on this has just been submitted (8-13-2002). I suppose it'll show up in the tutorials list soon.
