Default Modelling problem

Didn't know where to post this, so you can move it to appropriate thread.

Now, I'm following Pan's tutorial to make a weapon in SSHD, and I have to open the file in Blender, but my file is .max, so Blender won't read it. Does anyone know how to fix it?

If it's .max, you're SOL, unless you can find an add-on, which I wasn't able to. If you made the model, export it as something Blender friendly. If it's not, find another model. Or start making your own models.

*.max is a proprietary file format for 3ds Max. The only way you can open it is if you have 3ds Max.

I do have 3ds max. I just can't export it to a Blender-friendly format. If I click 'Save As' it lets me save it as .max or .chr file, which Blender is not known with.

Well, I don't use 3ds Max, so I didn't know if you could export it as a .obj, .3ds. etc. If you want to make models for Serious Sam HD/3 you're gonna have to use something else. My recommendation is Blender, since it's fairly easy to use. Maya and Zbrush are some other choices.

You need to export, not Save As. The option for Export should be a couple lines below Save As. From there you can export to several file formats, including OBJ. That should work with Blender.

zbrush falls into whole different category then maya, 3dsmax or blender. You usually use it for high poly sculpts, not so much to make low poly meshes (although that is possible aswell).

And blender easier? Maya is to me far more easier, while i bet for some other 3ds max is easier. They are all good apps, and some likes one, the other prefers other app. But blender is free , unlike 3ds max or maya.

As viper said, you should use export function, and there you should have OBJ file format, that one should work with blender. At least it did when i exported it from maya (and then into sed3).

Everytime I save the file as .3ds in Max (which is Blender friendly), Blender still can't recognize it (through File\Open). I tried the Import option, which did read it, but opened nothing but a cube (that is normally opened with Blender). I had problems with it, but now I found another model, that is .blend format. Thanks anyway guys. Will ask you if I need more help.

hm, sometimes, when importing from varions apps, the scale of model can be different in those apps.

This means while scale in 3ds max looks normal, in blender, i may be 1000 larger (and as such, you won't even see it, because you are zoomed in), because it can happen that cm in 3ds is equal to , say, meters in blender.

I don't know about blender, but i'm sure it has to have something like Outliner in Maya, meaing, list of all the models in the scene. I'd check that list to check if maybe the model is on the list, but ist too large to see it....


And also, why don't you just try with OBJ file format? Trying using that instead 3ds....
