Will SS:HD, or SS3 be compatible with DirectX 9?

I'm pretty sure the Xbox360 was released before we saw DX10 and DX10 GPUs, so i'd say it's a safe bet that it will.

Croteam would also be shooting themselves in the leg if they ditched DX9 given how many people are still using XP.

True, but a DX10 or 11 option would be nice. I can run 10 well enough and it sure looks nice when enabled.

Well, if memory serves, DX10 shaders can be more efficient than DX9 shaders, but due to the high penetration of DX9 on PCs (read: people still using XP), most games use practically the same code for DX10 as for DX9, which results in unoptimized DX10 code that doesn't run as fast as it should. Hopefully with DX11 that'll all change and we'll see DX10 paths improve in speed and features. I say hopefully, because it would require a user transition from WinXP to Win7. Hardware is less of an issue as everyone who has a PC with a graphics card that's less than 4-5 years old has DX10 capable hardware.

After player STALKER Clear sky, I can certainly testify to that. I'll be getting 7 when it is released, running Vista right now, but it will be a while before I have a DX11 card. My GTS250 should have some longevity to it I hope. But you are right, and also it would be ill advised to make it DX10 only which would lock it to the newer OS's only, ala Halo 2 for PC(which isn't DX10 anyways), but that is an entirely different story.

So far, the only game I have played that seemed to do DX10 well was Crysis.

For SS3 though I wouldn't mind a combo of both.

I do not want her to talk. At all. In any future Sam game.

Hmm, it would have to be pretty well done, otherwise the text option is probably better.

After looking at some videos of HD, it looks like the Maps ingame are identical to the original game...

This means Croteam either Built for hand the exact maps, OR have a Map converter, which I want...he he... ...

Or maybe they do it the way we do which is to highlight polys of a map (part of it, you don't want the whole model to be the whole map), export it to .raw and then import it in SED2

I have a question, not sure why I didn't think of this one way back.

Will SS:HD and SS3 use DirectX or OpenGL? Or, will we be able to choose, similar to the original SS series? Will the audio support OpenAL?

Thanks, I missed that. We'll have to see about that XAudio2. I believe them when they say it works great, but I have an X-Fi Platinum that would be sitting idle if it is software sound. Not a big deal, the rest of the powerhouse can handle it, but I love OpenAL in Vista.

OpenGL support was there in SS2, but it never really worked properly. I remember it was said during one of the SEd2 workshops on IRC that the OpenGL stuff was rather outdated, so until the OpenGL guys released some new stuff there was nothing much they could do about it.

Well, OGL 3.2 has been released, while i'm pretty sure we were still on OGL 2.x when SS2 was released. Surely there's lots of new stuff to play around with.

Perhaps OGL hasn't changed so much since the 2nd generation after all.

Although I don't understand any of the jargon in there, it does seem like 3.0 was a disappointing package for developers. Whether or not the 3.1 and 3.2 versions addresses some or all of the complaints I have no idea, would be interesting if a programmer in this field could shed some light on it.

True, there was some disappointment with OpenGL 3.0, but apart from the new way of handling objects that was supposed to be introduced, it seems like the updates in version 3.1 and 3.2 put it on pair with DX10 featuewise at least (not so sure about DX11).

I think you will find the new OpenGL not so disappointing any longer.

From what I can see in that, I'm honestly not impressed at all. There are far better looking games out there.

Concept is...well...

*sigh*

That's alright, I'm looking forward to it, looks like fun to me! I'm getting a little tired of all the "Realism" emphasis put on games lately.

Correction: shitty realism.
They always go way overboard with the grey and brown.
At least SSHD has some other colors thrown in there.

Idd, game devs must have a very depressing life if the only colors they see in their daily life are different shades of grey and brown. Either they need to stop living in toilets and basements and go outside, or they need to go see some form of doctor to help them with their massive depressions.

Plenty of color in the world, it just doesn't make it into modern "realistic" games.

Maybe it's just the art directors.
