With people constantly upgrading their computers, I doubt that'd be an issue.

Now that I think about it, I bet most of the problems with SS2 are due to the limitations of the XBox. The cartoonie style was probably chosen because of the limited graphics and low texture capability of the XBox. The horrible menu system was obviously due to it being written for a console. The XBox 360 is no much more powerful that even if they do dumb it down for it, it will probably still be a great game. Maybe I really do not have anything to worry about?

I think the art style was purely a design choice, the textures aren't any worse than in other games, in fact most of them look very realistic and detailed. If you did a straight comparison without having played the two games, I don't think you could even tell the difference, save for SS2 textures looking much better.

It's the enemies, levels and the use of special effects which make the game seem "cartoony" to people. You can still make extremely realistic levels with the editor without much effort if you want to.

And yes, you have nothing to worry about.

EDIT: In fact, here's some examples of just how gloomy SS2 can look like, taken from a scrapped horror map I used to work on for a while:

Definitely looks gloomy, but the HUD brutally kills the mood.

Need I mention that it can be changed and edited to your liking?

And another case in point I forgot to mention: the kronor levels don't look cartoony at all.

lolwat?

The Kronor Levels are the epitome of cartoony. Take a look at the enemies used, or the secrets, what about the last section with the uber large objects?

If you think Kronor is the epitome of cartoony, you should check your glasses, if any, and re-play the Ellenier levels

I agree that Kronor isn't as cartoony as many of the other levels, but it definitely doesn't look realistic either.

Hey guys. Very, very excited here, despite not visiting the forum for basically, years, SSHD makes me incredibly happy as I personally found the XBOX version the best version of the game, looking incredibly forward to SSHD.
I can see Sam having a great relaunch now, a shame that Duke Nukem is basically dead too.

Also here to quickly inquire; What's happening to Serious Sam Forever now? I imagine that the modders might be slightly offended by Croteam doing the same, but in the next engine up, I'm still looking forward to that.

SSF is still going strong. What makes you think they didn't know about this all along?

Geez, I'm glad you love my old SS1 mod so much that you actually decided to steal the idea. In fact, we might even avoid the word "steal" and just call that map of yours a fanart or something. =P

They could've made the whole game cel-shaded if they wanted it cartoony enough.. Actually I'd be more pleased even with cel-shade than with graphics that tries to look realistic and cartoony at the same time. It adds that cheap feeling to the game, like it's one of those shitty games based on CG movies.

I dunno really, just mainly the fact that both have the same objectives of going back to 'old-school' Sam in FE. No matter what is squeezed out of the SE2, SS HD will always look better due to SE3 and Croteam developing and in general, a lot of people are going to be more interested in SS HD than Forever.

Although. I'm personally looking forward to both, I just hope SSF makes it out first, or it'd be a little pointless with the release of SS HD this summer. Saying that, SSF is free and another nice mod for SS2.

Why do you say that? Two development studios can't possibly put out an identical product, let alone when they don't share any ideas or content with eachother.

I think the best option would have been for SS Forever to mix up with Serious Sam HD and thus help Croteam, since the quality seems pretty consistent between the two. SSF could easily share its resources (textures, models, sounds, etc) with HD, maybe even levels and gameplay modes since SED3 apparently supports direct loading of SED2 materials.

I agree with freker that SS Forever coming out at the same time as HD seems pointless; especially when SSF is based on an older engine. And it's the same game nonetheless, unless Forever really goes all-out on making the levels look and feel totally different, it'll be impossible to escape the feeling that you're playing the same game under a different name. And it seems like SSF is geared more towards multiplayer anyway.

Same game, same levels, same basic idea of making a remake of First Encounter. Sounds like they share enough for me.

I don't remember Croteam or the SS:F team officially stating how they will be remaking FE. So where did you get this information?

Relax dude, if you have followed any other remakes for other games you will see that the same base can lead to vastly different outcome. It depends entirely on what content will be remade, and we have no information about that, so we as Serious Sam fans might as well just be excited about both until we get some solid information that might change that.

You will all get a chance to see some of the differences between SSF and SSHD in July. Prophets of Sam will be running a public beta of their multiplayer component. You might want to start looking for your SS2 discs...

eh, after they release ssam:HD they should then do SSAM2:HD. Put in good textures, ditch all the cartoony looks, reskin the silly enemies, drop the cartoon cutscenes, I bet that game would up the appeal 100X and really surprise people.

There's no point in remaking SS2 since it's still a fairly new game and already uses a more advanced version of the engine.

Plus it'd be pretty much impossible to ditch the "cartoony" look unless you remove all the cutscenes and NPCs from the game altogether and grayscale/deform the levels and remove all the secrets. Even then that'd be entirely pointless since the game's primary flaws are in gameplay, not the style.

A little bit of humor is alright, like silly secrets and one-liners. But you're right that the game needs a major overhaul to not feel cartoony, the game basically would need to be redesigned from scratch.

gdfsgdfg: Serious Sam Forever is not developed by Croteam.

I have a 360 but much more interested in the PC version. I hope Croteam makes some good money on this so that they can really start producing more games. SS1 should go down in the hall of history of games. It sure is a classic which I just can't wait to play again.

There is the risk of jerky performance since the X360 is not even powerful enough to run Quake 4 at best settings without lags here and there. It depends on how much graphical quality will be sacrificed for the X360 version.
