You can't right click -> remove from taskbar, like all other icons? I don't have Windows 7 or 8 installed anywhere so I can't check

I'm already on Windows 10, so I can't test this, but from the PCMR subreddit.

http://i.imgur.com/E2UekZU.png

A quick look at the comments suggests this works, so uninstalling the update may have been overboard.

EDIT: Damnit Angelo, you ninja-ed me. Is "ninja-ed" even a real word? I guess it is now.

Even if I hide the notification, the gwx.exe process still stays working, taking up system resources for nothing, and no, Angelo, you can't right click and turn it off, you can "end process" gwx.exe from the task manager, but it launches again after restart. From what I can see, this update only adds this and does nothing else, so I think removing it and then hiding it in windows update so that it doesnt show up again is the right way to do it.

This is only day 1, I'd expect MS to make this thing go away soon enough, especially after people reserve the upgrade. Though I don't think I'll actually bother, this Win7 installation is close to 4 years old, I can't imagine it being a good idea to install a new OS on top of that base.

EDIT: Reading about this further, is it really true that free upgraders will not even get the option to set OS updates to install on command? Are MS really going to get even more retarded about this than they already were in Win7 and 8? Random restart prompts that try to be as annoying and intrusive as possible and possible stability issues are not fun to deal with and are exactly the reason why I set updates to manual control.

I hope it stays there for a little longer so that developers don't have to rely on old operating systems anymore (although to be fair, Windows 7 is still pretty good, it's just that testing machines are hard to find/make)

I do hope you know that Windows 7 was so much worse in that regard than Windows 8

I have read reports to the contrary. Win7 allows manual updates and the worst I have to deal with is over-insisting restart nagotron that you need to silence every 4 hours at the very least, but nothing you can't avoid just by delaying update installation until at the end of the session.

Can't really imagine how Win8 can beat that by such a large margin as you claim, does it suck your dick while installing updates?

You can set Win7 to manually update, so not even the every 4 hour thing appears for me. Hope Win10 will do the same.

It only appears some time after you install updates and at least 1 of them requires a restart.

Where did you guys/gals see this?
I havent seen it, on win 8.1.
I DO however have 'iStartMenu; installed, so maybe thats why I am not seeing it?
I am seeing on the sign in screen that there is an update, in the bottom right corner, before signing into windows.
Is that the one you are talking about?

Reserved. I'm still a little nervous because there are big disadvantages to an upgrade version, but I haven't actually needed to reformat a PC in probably 10 years. So I guess that isn't as big a deal.

Dave3d, it shows up as a windows icon in your notification bar (where the clock goes).

You know, "reservation" is a pretty bad choice of word in this program. Initially I thought it meant I was just reserving a serial key or something and happily clicked, but it's basically scheduling an automatic download and everything. And to top it off they tuck the cancellation button away in "Check confirmation" within a vague top-left icon that I didn't even know was a menu button at first. Their on-line FAQ on how to cancel made no mention of the "Check confirmation" option either, so que my confusion when I followed their guide to the letter and saw no cancel button anywhere.

Found out you have to have auto-update enabled, OR manually install KB3035583:

Quote:
First, you must be running Windows 7 Service Pack 1 or Windows 8.1, and you must have installed a March the Windows update dubbed KB3035583, according to blog site VentureBeat. That update will already be on your PC as long as you have Automated Updates enabled.
I dont have auto update enabled, nor do I have update look for ANYTHING except urgent security updates.

Haven't reserved, got the option (in my task bar right now) but I'm on the fence about it, I hate OS reinstalls. And I don't want to break any software/games I might have till Win 10 is better supported.

Plus, not seeing a whole lot of advantages compared to Win 8.1, I mean, I already use a modded start button and all.

Well, there is DX 12, and the whole 'games spread across more cpu cores' thing, those are the only 2 reasons I am getting it (besides its free, lol).

Multi-threading of algorithms is done by the programmers of the programs, not by the OS.

Is that really true? That'd be one reason to upgrade if it does utilize multi core cpus better, but like said I doubt it can make mostly single/dual core games suddenly run on more.

It will probably only affect new games made for DX12, I doubt it could possible do any difference to DX11 and older games. Also judging by how Mantle works, it will remove a lot of work from the CPU, so new games might actually start runnign very well on cheap dual-cores again I don't want to move on to Win10 just for DX12 though, I hope someone hacks DX12 back into Win7, like how they hacked DX10 back into WinXP years ago...

The only way such a thing could happen out of itself is if DX12 happened to be utilizing more CPUs internally, which might be the case, I dunno.. I'm not an expert on DirectX, but I know that DX has been improving in speed with every release, so.. maybe?

You don't need to install Win8 first to get Win8.1

Put in an 8.1 USB/Disk/whatever, use KMS key (installs, but doesn't activate, this one is for 8.1 Pro): GCRJD-8NW9H-F2CDX-CCM8D-9D6T9

Then when it's installed, use your own Win8 key to activate..

Yeah.. I'm still in the Windows 10 insider preview, so I'll have 1 year to get the non-preview license this way when I decide to re-install again
