Default Heavy Metal?

Because Quake 2's and Painkiller's soundtrack are so fucking kickass, I decided to give the true heavy metal genre a try (Linkin Park is Nu Metal, apparently). First I try to look up for classics like Metallica's No Remorse, which was the inspiration for Doom's E1M1, and it was okay. Then I look for other Metallica songs and things like Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven but they don't sound like the metal I know (more like rock or blues, I say). Also, Quake 2 and Painkiller is actually industrial metal, so says someone on the Youtube comment section.

And there goes 12 hours of my day

Default Re: Heavy Metal?

Painkiller's soundtrack is not just havy or industrial metal. There are also pure thrash tracks like Factory Fight. Other tracks like Cemetery, Catacombs, Atrium Complex and Docks (my favorite) are pure heavy metal. BooH's OST is a bit different, but still cool to listen.

Here are some cool metal bands and their best albums rated by me:

1. Judas Priest: - heavy metal
1. Ram it Down (1988) - heavy, rhythmic, cool guitar solos, powerfull sound, memorable songs - just the perfect heavy metal album.
2. Defenders of the Faith (1984) - same as Ram it Down;
3. Painkiller (1990) - many consider it the bes Priest album of all times, mostly because the legendary status of the title track. Rhythmic, fast and aggressive, Rob show the high ranges of his voice;
4. Angel of Retribution (2005) - Pure example of heavy metal.
5. Stained Class (1978) - on first hear is closer to a classic rock album, but contains cool chords and solos, also the whole arangements are diverse, and in the same time - you feel it as old heavy metal style if you listen carefully;

Honorable mentions - Screaming for Vengeance (1982), Killing Machine (1978), British Steel (1980), Nostradamus (2008), Redeemer of Souls (2014), Jugulator (1997)

Unhonorable mentions - Rocka Rolla (1974), Sad Wings of Destiny (1976), Sin after Sin (1977), Point of Entry (1981), Demolition (2002), Turbo (1987)

Megadeth - thrash metal
1. Endgame (2009)- heavy, fast, aggressive, loud - there is no other Megadeth album with such a ferocity in the tracks.
2. So Far, So Good... So What? (1988) - many consider this album to be a midget between two giants (the previous album "Peace sells" and the next "Rust in Peace"), but the truth is none of them can step on it's little finger. Compared to them, "So far" is heavier and darker.
3. United Abominations (2007) - the most politically charged Megadeth album. Not so fast, but still heavy and aggressive.
4. Peace sells (1986) - pure gem in matters of composition.
5. Rust in Peace (1990) - a bit overrated, but one of the best examples of thrash metal. Not so genius as the previous two albums.

Honorable mentions: Killing is my business... (1985), Countdown to extinction (1992), Risk (1999), The World Needs a Hero (2001), TH1RT3EN (2013), Dystopia (2016)

Unhonorable mentions: Youthanasia (1996), Cryptic Writings (1997), The System Has Failed (2004), Super Collider (2014)

FEAR FACTORY - Industrial Metal
1. Demanufacture (1995)
2. Digimortal (2001)
3. Archetype (2003)
4. Soul of a New Machine (1992)
5. Mechanize (2010)

The rest are "meh"...

Yngwie Malmsteen - Neoclassical power metal
1. Oddisey (1988) - No doubt the best Yngwie album, where he partners with famous vocalist Joe Lynn Turner.
2. Marching Out (1985) - the second Yngwie album, considered by many to be his best. The vocalist Jeff Scott Soto have pretty memorable voice, Yngwie is doing hell of a kickass solos and compositions.
3. Seventh Sign (1997) - 90's albums of Yngwie are not so full of ferocity, as his earlier albums, but they are with much cleaner sound, complex compositions and still full of aggressive, highspeed metal solos. "Never Die" is the pure example for this.
4. Perpetual Flame (2008) - good colaboration between Yngwie and Tim Ripper Owens. Memorable tracks, loud neoclassical power metal, highspeed solos...
5. Rising Force (1984) - the debut album, which consist almost of instrumental tracks (except "Now your ships are burned" and "As above, so below" where Jeff Scott Soto sings).

There are no weak Yngwie albums (except 2012's Spellbound maybe). you've got to listen to all his discography, to find out what you like and what you not.

Honorable mentions - Inspiration, World on Fire.

Steel Panther - Glam Metal Parody Band
They are actuall band, but they have only three albums so far. Their sound is clean 80's heavy metal - in matters of composition and in matters of playing tehniques. Pure heavy metal at it's finest. Add and the profan lyrics and you'll laught your ass out... This band is 10/10.

You lost me when you said Rust in Peace is overrated. To me it's their most technical work and it's full of classics. Also, Youthanasia and Cryptic Writings aren't actually bad albums, just not as heavy as you'd expect. I would put Risk in the Unhonorable Mention page.

Why are Pantera and Slayer not on here? And I think Metallica should also be mentioned. Load and ReLoad are just blues disguised as a Metallica album and St. Anger is just... wtf, but the rest of the albums are pretty damn good and Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets and ...and Justice for All are their best work.

Well, matter of taste, I guess. IMO Pantera's best album is "Power metal". Everything after it is not my kind of metal. As for Metallica:

1. Dave 'em all... I mean "Kill em all"
2. Master of Puppets
3. Metallica
4. Ride the Lightning
5. Death Magnetic

The rest ("...and justice for all", "Load","Reload" and "St. Anger") are "meh".

Slayer's early works are excellent (Black Magic > all other Slayer tracks!) but the rest is just a bunch of noise shredds.

Black Sabbath with Toni Martin have cool albums in heavy metal style, like: Eternal Idol, Headless Cross, Tyr, Cross Purposes. ''Forbidden'' sucks.

I don't think we're going to agree if you rate the Black Album above Justice. Hell, my favorite Pantera album is Cowboys from Hell. To each his own, eh?

Also, Dave 'Em All.

For a long while now I really got into Metal and its subgenres.

I especially like:
  • Metalcore
  • Deathcore
  • Death Metal
  • Trash Metal
  • Speed Metal
  • Power Metal
  • Gothic Metal
  • Heavy Metal
But what I adore is this subgenre https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronicore

Heavy metal --> Iron Maiden.

Also, BG and Devostator gave a nice list to start exploring from, though a lot of those bands are not heavy metal, but other subgenres.

In the list of metal to check out I'd place Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, Slayer, Opeth, Iron Maiden, Dream Theater, Machine Head, Trivium, System of a Down, Destrophy, Nevermore, Kamelot, Sepultura, Judas Priest, Disturbed, In Flames, Volbeat and Mutiny Within. I could list my favorite albums per band, but that'd take a while.

Eh leave those pussy metals alone, this is the real deal:

But yeah, my first suggestion would be Iron maiden; they are kinda unique and really a must hear. Their last album that came out last year iirc, had a song long 18mins long - Empire of the Sky.

One thing i love about them, is that they a lot of times have rather cool stories, they are almost educational.

Metallica also, I'd say hammerfall isn't too bad either, even if they are a little new.
Unisonic had some good songs too.

Iron Saviour is also great:

Even then I have no idea what he's talking about, and I don't think he does either.

Anyway, moar metal:

YouTube Video: Wintersun - Time

This is actually my favorite song of all time. It embodies the state of being "surreal" more than any other piece of audio I have ever listened to.

YouTube Video: Nocturnal Rites - Still Alive

This is also up there as one of my all time favorites. The vocals, while not quite as rangey as other power metal vocals, are still so powerful and beautiful that they lift you up into the clouds like a Valkyrie, on your way to live among the gods and your fellow fallen warriors in Valhalla. The fact that the band is Swedish also adds to this effect. Also, the band uses 7 string guitars which add a nice "brutal" contrast to the otherwise very melodic music. The band was death metal in it's very early days and this addition can be seen as a "scar" from those days.

Eh, anyway, did listen to wintersun, not that much though, pretty good. Didn't know for Nocturnal Rites though, the song you linked at least is pretty good. Vocal reminds me of some other power (i think) metal band, can't remember the name....but yeah, good stuff....

There is some good metal being mentioned in here, but some of these bands just don't qualify... (Disturbed, Volbeat, Opeth [nothing that boring can be classified as metal])

Bands that I listen to:
The Acacia Strain (not so great, but listenable)
The Agony Scene
All That Remains
Allegaeon
Aman Amarth (I own one album, don't really care for it)
Amorphis
Ankla
Anthrax
Arch Enemy
As Blood Runs Black (really wish they didn't break up)
As I Lay Dying
At The Gates
August Burns Red
Austrian Death Machine
Between The Buried And Me (pretentious, I don't caare for most of it)
The Black Dahlia Murder
Bleeding Through
Bloodbath
Bolth Thrower (mostly boring, they spent an entire career rerecording one album over and over)
Born Of Osiris
Bring Me The Horizon (the three albums I have are mostly crap, I bought them by mistake)
Burning Skies
Bury Your Dead
Caliban
Callenish Circle
Candiria (more rap than I care for)
Carcass
Cavalera Conspiracy
Children of Bodom
Chimaira
Daath
Dark Tranquility (don't care for it)
Darkane
Dead Horse (get worse with each album)
Death (don't carte for them, R.I.P. Chuck)
Deicide (also get worse with each album)
Demon Hunter (very light metal)
Dethklock (jokey, but still heavy as fuck)
DevilDriver
Devin Townsend (not all as heavy as the others, but his Strapping Young Lad albums are awesome)
Diecast
The Dillenger Escape Plan
Dimension Zero
Dimmu Borgir
Disarmonia Mundi
Droid
Dry Kill Logic (a little lighter than most of my collection)
E. Town Concrete (rap/metal, first three albums are good to better, fourth one sucks)
Emmure (their best songs are awesome, most of their songs aren't awesome, not much middle ground)
Entombed (love their old stuff)
Exhumed (they loved the classic sound of Carcass so much they wrote all of their songs to copy that style)
The Faceless (they get more technical with each album, but I like their first effort the most)
Fear Factory
Fleshgod Apocalypse
From The Shallows
God Forbid
Gojira (french tree huggers)
Gorguts
Grave
Grip Inc.
GWAR (also jokey, but still worth listening to)
Hate Eternal
The Haunted
Heaven Shall Burn
Hemlock
In Flames
Into Eternity
Job For A Cowboy
Killer Be Killed
Killswitch Engage
KillWhitneyDead (lots of samples, I would skip it)
Machine Head (metallica with talent)
Machinemade God
Malevolent Creation (pretty sure they are racist neonazis, I would skip if I had it to do again)
Manntis
Mastodon (less metal with each album, but still worth listening to)
Megadeath
Meshuggah
Metallica (the Load albums and St Anger should all be destroyed)
Morbid Angel
Morgoth
Mors Principium EST
Mudvayne
Mushroomhead
Napalm Death
Nightrage
Nile (some great songs, but a lot of crap in between, and quite a few Egyption stype intrumentals that I'm not into)
Nocturnal Rites
Nothingface
Novembers Doom (only like one song)
Obituary
Pantera
Paradise Lost (they went from metal to rock as they went on)
Parkway Drive
Prong
Psychostick (very jokey, but I love what I love)
Ripping Corpse
Rumpelstiltskin Grinder
Salt The Wound
Scar Symmetry
Sepultura (though I haven't cared since Max left)
Shadows Fall
Six Feet Under
SLAYER!!!
Slipknot
Soilwork
Soulfly
Stuck Mojo
Susperia
Sylosis
Testament
Thine Eyes Bleed
Threat Signal
Three Mile Scream
Through The Eyes Of The Dead
Trivium
Unearth
Vampire Mooose
Whitechapel
Winds Of Plague
Zimmer's Hole (haven't liked anything after their first album)

Then there are even more bands that I don't own and off the top of my head:
Cattle Decapitation
From A Second Story Window
The Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza
Achitect
Architects
The Devil Wears Prada
Solution 45 (don't own any yet, might by the end of the week)
Cannibal Corpse
Asphix

I suppose Volbeat could be mostly classified as hard rock, but they do have some heavy stuff. But I don't understand how you can call Opeth boring, are we listening to the same band? Maybe if you only listened to anything made after Watershed. The first few albums never caught my interest, but Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Ghost Reveries, and Watershed are definitely metal and awesome albums at that.

There's a lot of issues with the people at the Metal Archives but without them I would have never discovered this amazing band. Spiritual new age death metal FTW.
