Default Linux Client Beta: Feedback and Bug Reports

Ubuntu Dapper i386 fully updated and latest Nvidia drivers, Opteron 144 / 7800GT / 1024MB cheapo RAM / 2048/256k:

Notes so far:
Game works fine except movies stutter and mousewheel weapons switching wont work
Unable to get second/third player profile keybindings to stick under the same login
Water opaque from beneath
LOD (?) problems on some levels, particularly Chan levels - buildings etc. flicker in and out depending on distance from them
Co-op seems to work perfectly both online and LAN, although server browser reports zero pings to about half the servers
Save dialogue has var names instead of dates/times
Walkways flicker in and out on Forsaken Compound
Anti-aliasing doesn't seem to work at all

Otherwise excellent and I really can't see what all the whining and whingeing was about... It's a bloody good ride so far!

Post your observations here in a thread lacking spelling mistakes in title and content so far! (I think!)

EDIT: THANK YOU VEDRAN AND CROTEAM!

Thumbs up Re: Linux client appreciation and jubilation station... also bug reports

barring the anomalies mentioned, the beta worked great on my 2 Ubuntu 6.06 x86 AND a x64 systems.
On the x64 platform I was receiving the error maxmtu reported:
./Bin/Linux-Dynamic-Release/Sam2: error while loading shared libraries: libopenal.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

here's what fixed it for me,
copied over (from my x86 to x64) libopenal.so.0.0.0 and libXxf86misc.so.1.1.0 to my ss2 dir,
created links in ss2 dir:
ln -s libopenal.so.0.0.0 libopenal.so.0
ln -s libXxf86misc.so.1.1.0 libXxf86misc.so.1

oh and I forgot I also did this as I was getting the openal error
ln -s libasound.so.2.0.0 libasound.so.2

vi RunSam2
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:.

Again thanks to the Cteam for letting us have fun with the beta, I'll be purchasing a few copies of ss2, now I have that perfect holiday gift for all my Linux buddies!

Well I just ran a 4 player deathmatch server with zero problems for an hour. Damn Little Touble is good to be back in... Netcode seems vastly superior to previous installments...

How do I name the server though? Eh, I guess I should go looking at all the windows threads I've been avoiding for the last year...

Yes I to have been playing non stop now and I no longer get Sync disconnection problems anymore like I was getting in bloatware. The general audio is perfect and no glitches either in Linux. Keep it coming Vedran I am working on my Dedicated right now, but I was just hosting a game with 8 ppl and I didn't feel anything, all the other ppl even said it was stable on their end.

Okay, here's something I'd like to know:

How's the editor? Does it work fine in Linux?

The editor appears to be a bit more beta than the game...

Mouse/spacebar viewport navigation seems broken and you can't move window dividers about to get access to various menu items/controls.

I can follow the first room tutorial up to creating a wondrous green cube, but that's about it so far.

Hi all.
This thread will be used as a reference for linux beta issues. Everyone that we have received an e-mail from have been asked to check it.

Thank you for your help and effort you are putting into making the linux port of Serious Sam 2 and Serious Editor 2 be as good as possible.

Best regards,

Hi,
I have a true 64-bit system (gentoo amd64) and I don't have the possibility to copy over some 32bit libs:

Hi Guys,

I've tried the client today but all I get is that error:

Code:

./Bin/Linux-Dynamic-Release/Sam2: error while loading shared libraries: Bin/Linux-Dynamic-Release/Core.so: cannot handle TLS data
Does anybody know what's wrong?

That's an error I once got too... Vedran said updating the Kernel might work.

I had similar segfaults from time to time.
I modified my openAL config file (~/.openalrc) and now it's good.

Small problem. After unzipping the beta the binaries do not have the execute bit set and have to be set manually. This could be because, I think, zip does not support file permissions (I might be wrong). Possible solution would be to use gzipped tarball which should, if done correctly, hold the execute permission. I don't see a problem in doing this since it is pretty common to use in Linux (probably more common than zip is).

Ok tried running it now. Got an error about openal missing. No problem, installed it.

Then, I try again and get this error:
Code:
FTL: Fatal error: Cannot set display mode!
FTL: GfxAPI error:
FTL: OpenGL error: Missing support for vertex and/or pixel shaders 2.0.
INF: SysMessage: Fatal error: Cannot set display mode!
INF: GfxAPI error:
INF: OpenGL error: Missing support for vertex and/or pixel shaders 2.0.
Pixel Shaders 2 are required to play?

System is Ubuntu Dapper. Laptop. P4 2.4ghz. 1gb ram, nVidia GeForce4 420 Go 32MB AGP 4x. Kernel 2.6.15-27-686. Proprietary Nvidia drivers installed and working. Widescreen 1280x854.

I'll try again on my desktop later. It has a Radeon 9800 so it might work better.

You expected a 32 Mb Geforce 4 to run a late 2005 game that uses DX9 and SMP2.0 graphics? I'd say the Radeon is petabazillion times more likely to run it.

Well it runs UT2k4, so I was hoping. Honestly I didn't know how intensive SS2 would be, since I have never played it before. I should have read the readme right away as it said that it requires Pixel Shaders 2, as also saying it needs files from the retail CD, so I might not be able to test the beta anyway to test on the 9800.

Oh well.

First of all, there is a lot of crashes. I think that the Croteam should make clear whether they accept core dumps or just some guides to reproduce the crash.

Unfortunately, I cannot set my highest resolution: my LCD can go up to 1280x1024, but 1024x768 is the highest resolution offered by the game.

I have an older system with a Geforce 4 Ti4200 128mb. I tried the game before (on windows) and it worked; the game box mentions geforce3 en geforce4 in the system requirements. The Linux beta doesn't run because of the requirement of 2.0 pixel shaders. Too bad...
Is that requirement final, or will later betas run on older graphics cards?

Geforce 4 Ti are the absolut minimum to run SS2, Geforce 4 MX and lower won't cut it, and 64 Mb is the absolut minimum amount of vRAM, 128 or 256 recommended.

The Shader Model 2.0 problem looks like hardware related rather than Linux-related to me.

I also get this error on Gentoo AMD64. This is after manually placing the 32-bit libXxf86misc.so.1 in the required place.

The SS2 window opens (briefly), then terminates. Although nothing is actually drawn inside it before it dies.

Yes, exactlly the same here. placed 32-bit libXxf86misc.so.1 in the required place, too.

I'm running Sabayon 3.1 32bits on a Core 2 duo processor and a Nvidia GeForce 6800 card.

Serious Sam2 starts up nicely, the movies blinks and stutters. Then the game crashes within the first minute.

Edit:

When shutting of the sound in sam2.ini

sfx_iAPI = 0;

the game runs fine, the movies dont flikker anymore, but runs too fast.

Edit2:

Sound works now thanks to "Sound bug is a gentoo thing, See this THREAD
Fixed"
