Default [News] Serious Sam HD Announced for PC and XBLA for Xbox 360 Platforms

Polish off your favorite shotgun because it is time to kick ass and.. well.. kick ass! Serious Sam returns for its 10-year anniversary (tidbit courtesy of Roman Ribaric) debut this year, 2009, powered by Croteam's latest and greatest technological wonder, Serious Engine 3, which will also power Serious Sam 3. According to the official press releases by CDV Software Entertainment AG and Majesco Entertainment who are publishing the PC and XBLA/Xbox 360 versions, respectively, Serious Sam HD will be released on the Xbox 360 in late summer and the PC version will follow this autumn. The game is being co-published by Devolver Digital, a production and publishing company based in Texas. Here are the press releases:

CDV Publishes PC Classic

CDV Software Entertainment AG works together with Croteam and Devolver Digital to develop Serious Sam HD for the PC, which will be released in all territories (except in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independant States) in retail stores and as a digital download, in autumn 2009.

Serious Sam was released in 2001 and received numerous awards, including Game of the Year from Gamespot and the Editor's Choice award from IGN. Based on Croteam's Serious Engine 3, Serious Sam HD sticks to the original by sending the hero to the battlefields of various ancient civilizations against Mental's armies. The same speed and action-packed game mechanics and the characteristic humor have been preserved and will shine like new in high definition!

"We were thrilled by the idea of resurrecting Sam with spectacular HD visuals and pimping him up for Xbox LIVE. Sam's fanbase is still very active and motivated us to do this project. Therefore, we are happy to confirm that Sam will return as cocky, bold, and sharp-witted as always to the screens of his loyal fans and to new players as well," said Roman Ribaric, CEO of croteam.

"CDV is very pleased to cooperate with the publishing of Serious Sam HD. The title inherits from its previous success. Even today, Serious Sam still revels in its cult status among gamers. The production of an HD version of this classic is good news for all PC gamers," said Arne Peters, COO of CDV Software Entertainment AG.

Classic Shooter Franchise Reborn in Glorious High Definition for Late Summer Release

EDISON, N.J., June 25, 2009 – Legions of long-time fans and a whole new generation of gamers around the world can now experience serious shooting mayhem as Majesco Entertainment, an innovative provider of video games for the mass market, today announced that Serious Sam: The First Encounter HD is coming to Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft. Developed by Croteam, the creators of the Serious Sam franchise, and produced in partnership with Devolver Digital, Serious Sam: The First Encounter is re-tooled and re-vamped in glorious High Definition with an all-new version of the CroTech engine.

“We are really excited to update our hero and recreate Sam in stunning high definition for Xbox LIVE Arcade players,” said Roman Ribaric, CEO of Croteam. “The fans have lobbied us hard to do this, so we are stoked about bringing Sam back as big, bold and bad as he ever was.”

The game is being produced by Devolver Digital, a brand new production and publishing company based in Austin, Texas, specializing in delivering top quality entertainment to gamers worldwide at affordable prices by any and all means available.

“We are almost inappropriately excited that this fun and robust game is our first humble offering to gamers worldwide,” said an unnamed, masked spokesperson for Devolver Digital. “And bridging the gap between the fine folks at Croteam and Majesco feels good too. It’s a long way from Croatia to New Jersey, but worth the walk.”

“Xbox LIVE Arcade is an important platform in our overall strategic plan,” said Gui Karyo, Executive Vice President of Operations for Majesco. “Serious Sam has a long history of console success and this graphically enhanced version is a great first title to kick off our Xbox Live Arcade initiative.”

Serious Sam HD is not your mother’s generic, large-scale, orchestral scored, Space Marine-themed epic FPS with dialog that pretends it’s an RPG...instead, Serious Sam HD is a grab you by the jibblies run and gun, twitch FPS: BIG guns, TONS of enemies, 4-Player Online Co-Op and stunningly superfluous HD graphics that rival retail boxed games. You've waited forever but Serious Sam is back from the nether with its award-winning game play that will remind you why you play FPSs in the first place.

The CDV digital distribution may happen through Steam. Croteam said they would look into releasing something on Steam, so HD may be the thing to check out for all you Steam-lovers out there. Until we have official confirmation, though, don't take my word for it.

Well, even if the military shooter is in halt, doesn't it count as one of projects?

Epic. I'm actually more excited about this than any full-retail game at the moment.

Long time no post, long time no visit, but still...

It's great to see Serious Sam done properly for the xbox 360 and PC, in 2009. I'm amazed that such news only come when I'm halfway through the second encounter on Serious Sam xbox, which is, to me, the best release of Serious Sam yet. It has been 2 years since I last played it, and it feels almost as fresh as when I first played through the egyptian levels of the first encounter, in spring 2001. 8 years have passed.

Sure, a proper sequel to the first and second encounters would have been more welcomed, but the simple remake of both the first and second encounters deserved to be done, after the multiple awards both of these games received. Not that Serious Sam 2 was bad, but it wasn't nearly as memorable, or as engaging.

The critics loved the first encounters, the fans too.

Great move Croteam. If it ain't broken don't fix it, but revamp the engine, bring it in HD, and introduce it to millions of new gamers worldwide. It is, by far, the most ambitious XBL title to date. At last, a real XBLA title, with as much content as a standard retail release, that isn't a cheap cash-in attempt, as with most of the XBLA title out there. I'm glad to hear about a new release by Croteam.

I wish you the best of luck!

Don't worry, I doubt Croteam will make the same mistake as Starbreeze.

Haha, I certainly hope so.

Now I know why Riddick wears goggles all the time. It's Escape from Bloom Bay since the remake.

Imagine an unlockable multiplayer model of Sam that you get at the end of the game with "I busted ass for my sunglasses and all I got was this lousy T-shirt" emblazoned on the back of his shirt.

Or "I busted ass to wear my vest again and I'm still wearing this lousy T-shirt"

What the?.. So they did admit that everyone in CIS will just download their game via torrents instead of buying it? CT is making it just worse. That guy at Valve was right about pirates being mostly underserved customers after all.

Hmm, what is the reason that they are refusing to sell in CIS?
I'm sure it's not a business decision but a legal one.
If it is, stop blaming developers and start talking to the people who run the country buddy.

Well of course.
The more people buy your game, the more chance you have of paying your employees, paying for distribution, packaging costs, cost of software used for making the game, paying for electricity and other bills for the building you're using, computers and equipment, technician bills so equipment can be kept in working order and of course for yourself.

Making a game isn't exactly cheap

If you don't make enough money, you can't make another game. and remember that not all the money from each game sold goes to you to split up to pay the above either, some of it goes to the people who sell the games (games stores and such)

No Deeps, all the money you pay goes to the retailer, the retailer already bought the copies from the publisher.
