Default PC: Level Editing?

Will there be the ability to make custom levels at least for the pc version?

Yes there will, but it probably won't ship immediately with SS:HD. We will probably want to polish the editor first (similar as with SS2 - the editor is in much better shape now, but extra post-release tuning/fixing is always a good thing).
(Btw, see http://forums.seriouszone.com/showthread.php?t=57801 for more details on the editor).

So there would be a patch for SS:HD similar to the latest SS2 patch?

Probably something like that. But that's not yet confirmed. It is just my guessing.

Just out of curiosity... is this editor patch going to ship in a shorter time span than the SS2 editor patch? Because more than a year is a long time.

Well the way I meant it would be if Sam:HD coming first was the case, then the patch would come out when SS3 is released (Since hopefully, SS3 should have SED3 packaged with it)

No, no, no, no, no.

SS3 probably takes an another year to come out at best, positively longer.

Want editor nau.

If not, at least release a public beta of the editor shortly after release so the community can help you guys out in testing it (and release mods/maps while they're at it)!

We have no idea if SS:HD will even be finished in 2009, it may be later.
Hence the Q3/4 2009 date.

Would it be possible to include a couple of sample worlds with the editor? Some of us are just no good at creating terrain. I don't need anything fancy, just terrain ready to place enemies and trees and stuff to create our own scenarios.

Would be nifty to have a random terrain generator, like in Worms.

You know, in principle a third party can always write a converter or generator on their own, and export to SS. So even if it isn't part of the editor, it can still be made.

A DM map using this function would be awesome.

An SP map using it though? How about random secrets and junk?

The problem would be that architecture wouldn't keep to the terrain so you may find it half sunk into the ground when it's not supposed to or in the air.

.. or you parametrize the architecture in the same way that you parametrize the terrain

That depends on how you map. I for example would generate the terrain and then add architecture.

But if it's randomly generated each time it'd be impossible.
.....that's what you meant by random terrain generator isn't it?

Each time? What in the world are you talking about? I see it as a SEd feature, not a game feature, so the terrain is generated by the mapper, not during level loading.

Hey Croteam: PLEASE have support for textures that are not perfect powers of 2!
I know direct x 10 has the capability so it would be nice to have it implemented.

I don't see much benefit in having non-power of 2 textures, to be honest.

Well, some textures look really crappy because of the Power of 2...
Street signs for one, some textures just need to be as is...

You can always fit them in transparent square box

I don't really see the point in non-power of 2 either, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to make that possible, as Necro said some textures would benefit from the extra flexibility.

Well what if you're taking pictures of rock in 9:16 and you want to use the whole rock. Smushing it into 1:1 screws everything up and looks very unnatural.

Good point, but: Go a bit further away from the rock and then crop the image till it is 1:1.

Use a shader that re-maps the coordinates seamlessly to just an area of your texture then. It's a really simple thing to program.

*edit
Not very, but extremely.

Effectively you're just wasting a bit of texture space, but that's not much of an issue with compression. Also I'm not sure how it's handled internally in DirectX, maybe they do just the same thing

And if I had told someone the phrase you just posted, I still would have used the to point out the uselessness of it.

No it isn't, atleast not unless you know how DirectX 10 handles this internally.
