Post Rock, Paper, Shotgun Hands-On With Serious Sam 3: BFE

Rock, Paper, Shotgun has posted their exclusive hands-on look at Serious Sam 3: BFE as it heads into beta testing. If you still had any lingering doubts about the seriousness of Serious Sam 3 then look no further because Croteam has brought back the non-stop mayhem we all know and love. In fact, Croteam has even tossed in a sorely missed feature of the originals: split-screen multiplayer support.
Quote:

It took me a while to remember and practice the techniques for taking out the three Kleer Skeletons, but then it’s relatively simple… Three. Three! Ha ha ha. How I laugh at the John who was playing that first level and thought three of them was something worth worrying about. What a pathetic guy that John was. Try twenty of them, accompanied by about fifteen Gnaar, and those are the ones attacking you from behind. In front are the frenzied masses of Beheaded Rocketeers, Cloned Soldiers and stomping Bio-mechanicals, tens of them, and of course all joined by the roaring hordes of Beheaded Kamikazes.

This all comes after I’ve just seen my first Technopolip Helicopter – a grotesque half-helicopter, half-octopus, all writhing tentacles and spinning blades, firing its machine guns at me as I try to evade the sudden arrival of dozens and dozens of fresh enemies. At no point can you stand still, ever. And even then, even when engaged in the world’s most elaborate – it’s not circle-strafe, it’s more – Möbius-strafe, you’re still getting pelted by bullets and desperately worrying about how the only health you can see is on the other side of them all.

If only three levels are good enough to make this reviewer replay them over and over then I think it is safe to say that the rest will rock your socks off. However, to play this FPS marvel you will need to make sure that your PC can handle it.

Minimum System Requirements
  • CPU: Dual-core from Intel or AMD at 2.0 GHz
  • Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7800/7900/8600 series; ATI Radeon X1800/HD 2600 series*
  • OS: Windows XP 32-bit (with service pack 2 or 3)
  • Memory: 1GB / 4GB free hard drive space
  • Sound Card: DirectX9.0c Compatible Sound Card

Recommended System Requirements
  • CPU: Quad-core from Intel or AMD at 2.0 GHz
  • Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 480/580 GTX; ATI Radeon HD 6970/5970*
  • OS: Windows 7 64-bit
  • Memory: 4GB / 4GB free hard drive space
  • Sound Card: DirectX9.0c Compatible Sound Card

* = ATI hardware requirements based on performance comparison charts from Guru3d.com and TomsHardware.com

According to Croteam it is possible to play the game at even lower than the minimum specs, but it will require messing with the settings quite a bit.

Update: Added possible ATI hardware requirements.

I have updated the article with possible ATI hardware requirements based on performance against nVidia hardware. These are not official.

Will it work with my NVIDIA GeForce 460 GTX? I'm playing HD on ultra setting with kinda good FPS so I think it's not the problem... But I have to be sure. ^^

The recommended says a Geforce 480/580 series, but that's for highest detail. It will definitely work, but you'll have to trade off some graphics features.

With stronger cards you can pull more antialiasing, higher resolutions, more precise shadows and LODs etc. But 460GTX is very good for normal to higher detail. I use it for work, so I can testify it runs SS3 just fine and looks great.
