Then I went to some other electronics stores where they also have (overpriced) games and they didn't have Skyrim, either they sold out really fast, or those stores are idiots. Hell, I couldn't even find the PC section easily, the PS3/Xbox/Wii were all flash, and the PC was somewhere on the side, filled with old releases and nothing new or interesting...

Guess I'll have to order Skyrim online...
Is there a reason for which you prefer to buy the physical copy?

It's the illusion of not being stuck with digital downloads. The kicker is that it still requires a Steam profile, and you still have to use Steam to play. The only difference is that you have a DVD with game content, which you can easily back-up after the first time downloading.

Retail copies of Steam games are A LOT cheaper than buying on Steam here. At least for new games... They all seem to be 50-60 euros on Steam while in retail they are 30-40... Especially single player games.

Plus having the box is nice too.

Edit: Oh, great, apparently the retail version still isn't available in my country yet...

You know, there's websites that sell Steam keys for a lot cheaper than they are on Steam. I think they buy them in bulk from the Euro 2 regions, where the games don't cost shit, and then sell them for more than that but still under Steam price. You could try your luck there.

If they're not region locked I don't see a problem. If these sites have existed for years I don't think Valve really cares.

I like going all FUS RO DAH in a shop myself and throwing all the junk around and dancing on the tables while nobody gives a shit.

At least, I thought so, but then I got visited by a Courier. Was quite a surprise

While buying it straight from Steam means you get to play it right off (well....you've still got to install it).

the fact that I've bought Oblivion twice now because of a broken DVD, I'm still not seeing the appeal of getting the retail version of a game

It requires Steam anyway, but the retail version is cheaper. So I get to eat my cookie and keep it at the same time... Well... I have to wait a few days, but hey, I've already waited weeks.

Plus, it makes me feel kinda... wrong... to pay over 40 euros for a digital product... Having some physical representation of the item kinda makes me feel better somehow.

I also have the retail version of Skyrim. I got the "special" edition with the "special" cloth map of Skyrim. Regardless, it was cheaper than on Steam. I never buy new games on Steam because retail is cheaper.

And of course the retailer canceled my order because it's out of stock. Assholes, they could've called and asked me if I want to wait for the next shipment, which I might have, but now, not so much. Might skip it entirely until the next Steam sale / until summer...

It doesn't get much better and I have over 10 hours with it.

If it gets a lot better later, cool, but for being so highly praised it really shouldn't punish you with boring gameplay for so long.

So far I can sum the skyrim experience as follows:

Pros:

Nice finishing moves
Very nice magic effects

Cons:

Poor combat
An arrow to the eyes of an enemy doesnt kill.
A quick stab at the foot might kill the enemy.
Villagers killed me for having killed a chicken.
Menu is infernally crap.

Poor combat how? I think it's at least the same level as in Oblivion...although the AI could be a lot smarter in some cases. If you don't like the menu you can mod it (dunno if the construction kit is yet out but UI overhaul mods are already planned).

Melee weapons require you to engage the enemy.
Bows require you to be far away.

The sneaking and archery skill go well together if you want to use bows.

Didnt know that a fantasy RPG required precision and skill in combat to mean absolutely nothing.

My bad.

As in it's boring and redundant to run up and repeatedly left-mouse button whack guys with their weapons in first person.
They could have taken some first-person melee weapon combat pointers from Dead Island to be more interesting and tactful.

I'll say. You haven't bought Skyrim yet, that's what's wrong with you.

I haven't bought it either, but that's because it's not available here for some reason and I really want a fancy retail box. I think I'll just get it off amazon. At the rate things are going, it'll take months before I can buy it here, and besides, got exams in about a month so I can wait however long shipping takes.

Would've been legitimate complaints, if Skyrim was an action game. It isn't.
