Cool Steam Public Beta Signup & Feedback

Hey guys! SLAwww is needing some help from any of you who would be interested in doing some beta testing for him. Since he is doing the official updates for Serious Sam Classic (TFE & TSE) we would like them to go smoothly and avoid game-breaking releases (like the first update had).

So if you are interested, please sign up in this thread. SLAwww will post periodic updates to the public beta (when it is available) and will ask for your feedback on them.

The first public beta is up. If you would like to test it, switch to the "public_beta" branch on Steam version of SE Classic. Right now there's just an extra item in video options menu for selecting your aspect ratio, and some modern resolutions are added to the list. I didn't change the HUD yet. We need to make sure at least the resolution selection work okay.

A widescreen adjustment was added to the public beta. There's a known problem with ammo bar intersecting with health bar in 16:9 mode. I'm trying to think of some solution that would work in all mods. In the worst case I'll just fix the HUD for the original game. Right now, weapon models should look correctly in all aspect ratios, and ingame FOV should be adequate.

High resolution fonts would be a problem because there's a font for every localization, and I can't make current low-res fonts look smoother. And what's with the main menu titles?

I'm guessing the bug that makes the Tommygun and the Laser shoot slower after a certain time. Rev couldn't fix that yet.

Yeah,this happens at classic fe non steam too.
This Bug happens after 1h and 5 mins of game.. after next hour firing speed is normal.

PS.Can i join to beta tester too? Have Both sam versions,non and steam version.

Anyone can join the testing, just switch to "public_beta" branch on Steam.
A person from serioussite already helped me find some problems in current beta. Mirrors don't work correctly, and cameras often glitch up. I fixed the mirrors already, and will update the beta once I find a way to fix cameras.

Is the bug with modern graphics card fixed? It causes weird polygonal bugs in the distance. It's in both the classics and Rev.

Are you talking about the graphics bugs where the polygon edges get darker edges when you move away and the part where polygons interconnect get "wavy" from a distance when you're moving? I thought that was a graphics driver quirk, since it appeared to happen when I upgraded my video card.

Frankly, the known errors were reported by a single guy, while all other testers keep saying everything is okay. A good testing involves digging into every hole, which most people don't want to do.

I don't think I encountered it. Can you show me a map with such a bug, so I can see if it reproduces on my PC? Of course I'm only able to fix something that I can reproduce on my own machine.

It's an engine bug, not a map bug. When you look at two intersecting brushes from a distance, the polygon edges "wave" when you move back and forth. I could make a video and upload it to YouTube if you want.

By description, it sounds like an issue with z-buffer floating point precision. It was always there, even in older GPUs nearby polygons located far away from viewer will have "stairs" between them. But I can't say the problem got any more severe on my newer GPUs. Since 2007 I've been using nVidia 8800 GT, 550 Ti2, 780 GTX and 980 GTX and never noticed z-buffer problems stronger than on my older GPUs.

Well, it's pretty noticeable and it wasn't an issue on my XFX HD5750. I don't know if it's caused by my vid card, drivers or the problem suddenly appeared, but that's what it is.

16:9 resolution: polygons disappear - sometimes when they are on the edge of your view, sometimes when you look at the corners.

Even that feedback helps. One person can say something is wrong and another gets more detailed about it.

The public_beta branch was updated! Testers, please pay attention to the following:
  • All modifications should work just like they did before;
  • Widescreen adjustment has to work properly;
  • Weapon models in widescreen mode should be displayed properly;
  • Cameras should work properly;
  • Mirrors should also work properly;
  • Polygons near screen edge shouldn't disappear
If no new errors are found, I'm setting the last build to the main branch. Then I'm going to do the similar thing for 1.05. There's still a problem with HUD elements intersecting one another in 16:9 though.

Mirrors are working correctly now, cool. I notice a problem that you can look through wall polys a bit with higher FOV. It's only noticeable from 96 and up, 95 works fine. I'm using 1920*1080, 16:9. Screenshot:

The public_beta branch was updated. Sniper zoom should be fixed by now. Also, models should be displayed correctly in Netricsa. I also added a gamespy fix to RCon.exe.
