Default Play as enemy models in SS2 tutorial

It's about time I got around to making this.

(any setting locations are as they are in Windows XP, and may be different for other operating systems)
Anyways, first, you have to make sure that your computer shows each file's extension (.exe, .txt, etc.) (If your computer already shows file extensions, you can skip this step). In any folder, click on "Tools/'Folder Options...'" in the toolbar. In the new window, select the "View" tab, under "Advanced settings", scroll down until you find "Hide extensions for known file types", and uncheck it (if it's not already).

Now, you can create a .nfo file for a model. .nfo files follow this format:
Code:
NAME="[Name]"
MODEL="[Model Filepath]"
THUMBNAIL="[Thumbnail Filepath]"
DESCRIPTION="[Description]"
First, make a blank text file in (from your main Serious Sam 2 folder) 'Content\SeriousSam 2\Models\Player' (if you don't have this path, create it). You can name it now, or later, it doesn't matter as long as it gets a .nfo extension at some point. If you add the extension now, you'll have to right click it and select "Open With", and open it with a text editor (such as Notepad). Now, copy the "code" above, and you can fill it in. And if you don't know what to put in for some of them...
  • Name: Simple enough.
  • Model: Those of you who are inexperienced with SEd2 may have trouble with this step. You have to search for the filepath in SEd2. Or, if other players have used enemy models in a game you've been in, most likely they've left errors in your console, which include filepaths. You can look through your All.log file to find them.
  • Thumbnail: This isn't really required. But if you want at least something for it, you can use "Content/SeriousSam2/Textures/Interface/Hud/adrenaline.tex"
  • Description: This is most likely obsolete. It's used in SS2's default character .nfo files.
As well, in the InSamnity! 2 mod, Dk added a new option for .nfo files:
Code:
MODEL_STRETCH="[Number]"
It adjusts the model stretch for the model. For those who don't know, a value of 1 means no stretch.

Ok, now for a .dsc file. Note that this file isn't required to make a model playable, and can be left out.
Yet again, create a new text file in the Player folder, and rename it now or later, making sure the filename will be the same as the .nfo file you made (just with a .dsc extension). Now, this file is very simple. It's just a description for the player list. Whatever you put in this file will show up when viewing your model in the player list.

Now, if you've put in everything that is required in correctly, the model should be playable in SS2.

---------------------------

Troubleshooting:
-Model appears as Sam ingame
»Either the filepath is incorrect, or the model you chose doesn't have a "Default" mechanism. The model will show up as a multi-colored box in the character info screen (after selecting it in the player list) if the filepath is incorrect. If the correct model shows up there, but appears as Sam ingame, it is missing the "Default" mechanism. There is nothing you can do if the model has no "Default" mechanism (if you want it to show up properly to other players online).

---------------------------

Some notes:
-This isn't limited to only enemy models, you can play as certain objects and NPCs as well. To check if an object is playable, you'll have to have to check the model's collision with "code mode" (Press Shift+Ctrl+Alt+c) in SEd2. It has to have a mechanism named "Default" in order for it to be playable.
-As an object, you can't move. if you're a prop object, you can slide around, but you can't use the movement keys to move yourself
-Trying to mount a vehicle as an object will most likely result in a game crash
-Your weapons will appear at your feet in third person if you swap weapons after changing to a "non-player model".
-Some non-player models may fall through the ground when you swap to them (like roller balls)
-Other players will still see your name if they aim at you
-You can expect other players will shoot at you if you're playing as an enemy model

The "nfo" and "dsc" files should have the same name, but the different extensions - for instance:

grunt.nfo
grunt.dsc

The "nfo" and "dsc" files should be placed in the folder:

Serious Sam 2\Content\SeriousSam 2\Models\Player

in order for the models to be shown in the Player Character Model list under Profile Settings.

Ah, missed that. I put in the information that would otherwise have slipped my mind in-game. Thanks, I'll add that to the tutorial.

That reminds me, I'm nearly finished on doing all enemy models (including bosses). Just need to resize the bosses so they're a good size and don't get in the way of the player's view (especially Mental Institution).

Notes for my upcoming enemy pack;
-getting in a vehicle as an enemy will make the player model sit ontop the vehicle but slide off and follow you when you turn and move

-You can't play as flying enemies like the Kung-fu master, vehicle type enemies and that strange flying robot from the Sirius levels. They just fall through the ground so don't ask me to make them

-If you change to a regular player model, the weapons will be at it's feet until you switch weapons

-ZumZum boss sits halfway in the floor. Not a severe problem but it can look silly if it's bigger than it already is (Pretty tiny at default)

-Death and running animations play properly (Except for those that don't have death animations). Bone problems are visible with the Centaur and he tilts sideways at the waist when you look up or down

The Description tag in the .nfo file? It can be left blank.
If you mean the .dsc file, you can leave it blank as well, or leave it out entirely. (I recently found that out)

Edit:

I've updated the tutorial with info about the Description tag and .dsc file.

I thought the last post was 7th April not 4th July

If you guys had read post #8, you'd have seen the truth; there are not 30 months in one year.

Well obviously if the date is like that then it's different
But when I've read the whole thread before I don't feel the need to read it through again

Can't you just accept it as a simple mistake a move on?

It wasn't really a bump don't worry about it

I just made a mistake with the date thinking the last post was earlier than it really was

People will be kind of afraid to write up an explanation, since you obviously do not intend to log in ever again.

I can tell you this though; SEd 2 is a map-maker for SS2.

As far as I know, for singleplayer models you need to change the default Serious Sam model, right? Because you can only use a different playermodel in multiplayer.

I try to do this but it isn't so easy as it seems, where is the collision mechanism here
